Canonists Warn Synod’s Canon Law Proposals Blur Lines of Church Authority

Critics say the commission’s recommendations on lay governance, tribunals and infallibility contradict Vatican II; the nonbinding report would require Pope Leo’s approval.

"The amendments to canon law proposed by a Synod commission—which have drawn criticism from canon lawyers—would require papal approval to take effect." So writes journalist Edward Pentin, a staunch supporter of the Bergoglian reforms; the statement comes as a surprise. Has the tide suddenly turned at the Vatican? In any case, voices that were once supportive are beginning to question certain reforms enacted in the name of synodality. This lack of consensus likely explains why the antipope Leo has postponed the publication of proposals regarding *Amoris Laetitia* that were drafted behind closed doors in recent days.
