The pope’s 007 reveals (by mistake) the enormous skeleton in Leo XIV’s cupboard

Jordi Bertomeu, the pope’s anti-abuse “policeman”, defended Prevost against accusations of covering up for the paedophile Father Lute. Yet the pope really did save him. With a device used in at least 1,058 other cases

How many paedophile priests does the Church have to deal with? How does it deal with them, and what becomes of them? The answer beggars belief, and comes from none other than one of the foremost experts on clerical abuse, Jordi Bertomeu, a close friend of Pope Prevost. As Giorgio Meletti recounts in this detailed article, which I urge you to read carefully, Bertomeu explains that the pope can grant “the grace of dispensation from the clerical state” to priests accused of sexual abuse: this avoids a canonical trial, and the offence vanishes as though it had never been committed. The victims? What do they matter? They have no right to information about the outcome of their complaints anyway, and if the pope wishes to grant the culprit a dispensation to extinguish his guilt, his decision is beyond appeal. If you think this “get-out-of-jail-free card” is a rarely used expedient, you are mistaken. Bertomeu himself supplies the figures: in the last nine years alone, a paedophile priest was pardoned every three days. So much for zero tolerance. Federica Tourn

Aparecida in celebration for the mosaics covering those in Lourdes

The pope approves in France the covering of the works by Marko Rupnik, who is under trial for abuse, but blesses the solemn inauguration in Brazil of the basilica façade signed by the Centro Aletti

It seems that the right hand of Pope Leo XIV does not know what the left hand is doing, yet the Church of Rome does not appear concerned about clarifying anything to the faithful or even to the clergy. And yet, no explanation comes to mind.

The mosaics of shame embarrass Pope Leo

In Lourdes, Rupnik’s mosaics on the façade of the Basilica will be permanently covered. Is there an ongoing conflict? One thing is certain: Prevost will meet abuse victims—though not those of the former Jesuit

Correction: Marko Rupnik’s mosaics in Lourdes are to be permanently covered. Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes Jean-Marc Micas has refuted the rector of the Rosary Basilica Michel Daubanes, who three weeks ago had announced that the mosaics of the former abusive Jesuit would be covered only for the days of the Pope’s visit on 26 and 27 September.

The Tile and the Drawer

When the Church transforms pain into a work of art, but forgets to open the archives. A reflection on the Church abuse project "Renaissance" by Sister Samuelle and Quentin Delcourt

The artistic project on abuse “Renaissance, la Symphonie des tesselles” (Rebirth, the Symphony of Tiles) continues: mosaicist Sister Samuelle and director Quentin Delcourt hold the final workshops to sign the tiles on June 4 in Brussels and the following days in two other locations in Belgium (June 5 in Oostakker, Ghent, and June 6 in Namur). Then the artist will proceed with the composition of the mosaic in order to finish the work for the presentation in Paris, at the beginning of 2027.
