Which one would you like to hear first?” The pope answered, “Well, let’s have the good news first.” The secretary responded, “Jesus has returned, and he’s holding for you on line one.” The pope cried out, “Well, that’s stupendous news! Just wonderful! What on earth could be bad news after learning that?” “He’s calling from Salt Lake City.”

A Catholic can attend the Divine Liturgy according to several traditions. But as soon as a Catholic wishes to attend a Latin Mass, suddenly liturgical diversity becomes a problem.

The Catholic Church prides itself on its universality, cherishes an impressive diversity of liturgical traditions, and regards that diversity as an expression of its richness. A Catholic can attend the Divine Liturgy according to the Byzantine tradition, the Maronite tradition, the Armenian tradition, or the Chaldean tradition. No one considers this a threat to ecclesial unity in and of itself. But as soon as a Catholic wishes to attend Mass as it has been celebrated for centuries in Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, and virtually the entire Latin Church, some ecclesiastical authorities in Rome begin to express concern.

In these days, much is being said about the new book by Msgr. Viganò, in which the authoritative spokesman for the FSSPX writes that all «postconciliar popes are in a state of schism with the papacy» and considers them «enemies of the papacy». Personally, I consider John Paul II and Benedict XVI to be saints, and I strongly advise Viganò’s anti-papal and anti-council adversaries not to read this article.
